Picture this: you’ve enjoyed your ritual morning coffee on the way to work, walk into the office and realise your team meeting starts in five minutes. A quick mirror check reveals you left most of your lipstick on the coffee cup.
Yikes! No time for a touch-up and you end up sitting through the meeting with lipstick only on the outer rims of your lips. Not a good look is it?
You’re not alone. It’s a daily challenge faced by most women.
When it comes to the lips, there are a few simple tricks to follow that can make your regular lipstick last longer. Our in-house makeup artist Jo, shares her top three tips to get maximum coverage and long wear from your favourite lipstick.
It starts with prepping your lips and creating a smooth base for the lip colour to adhere to.
TIP 1: Exfoliate your lips regularly
Here’s a quick and excellent recipe for a lip scrub you can whip up at home in minutes. Even better, you’re sure to have these ingredients in your pantry already. Coat your lips with this indulgent mix, kick back and watch a show on Netflix while the nourishing ingredients work their magic.
Try this quick and easy recipe:
1 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp honey
Few drops of olive or coconut oil
A washcloth or toothbrush
Combine the sugar, honey and oil in a small bowl. Then apply the mixture generously to coat your lips. Take a damp washcloth or toothbrush and gently go over your lips in small circular movements. This will lift any flaky dead skin off your lips and help the ingredients absorb into the skin’s deeper layers.
Then sit back and relax for 15 – 30 minutes before rinsing off your lips with water. Follow this with your favourite lip balm to lock in the moisture. Your lips are now primed and ready for lipstick.
TIP 2: Use a lipliner
Starting with a lip liner that’s closest in colour to the lipstick you’re going to use has twofold benefits.
Firstly, you can outline your lips giving it a neat shape, making corrections as you go. For example: for thinner lips draw the line just outside your lip line to make your lips appear fuller or accentuate the cupid’s bow shape on your top lip.
Secondly, after outlining the lips, fill in your lips with the lipliner. This will set the base keeping your lipstick colour pigments in place. While your lipstick may wear off, your lipliner base will hold.
TIP 3: Choose the right lipstick
Goes without saying, if you want your lipstick to last through lunch or drinks, opt for long-wearing lipsticks with high concentration of colour pigments.
Using the layering technique also helps. Apply a layer of lipstick then blot with a tissue paper before applying a second layer.
Many lipsticks can be drying and undo all the prep and care you’ve put in so far. Look for lipsticks that contain moisture replenishing ingredients. That way you still get the rich lip colour you love plus your lips feel comfortable and over time feel nourished and revitalised.
