We’ve all heard these comments about lipstick at some point or the other from well-meaning lipstick enthusiasts. After hearing the same thing way too often, you begin to wonder… and maybe even start believing them.
Have no fear, we checked in with our in-house makeup expert Jo, to clarify once and for all the top three lipstick myths that come up time and time again.
MYTH #1: Red lipstick is not for everyone
A classic red lipstick is like coffee to your mornings. It’s an instant pick-me-up and excellent mood booster. The truth is, anyone can pull off red lipstick, the trick is finding the right shade of red for your skin tone. Believe it or not, your hair colour also plays a huge part when it comes to picking the right shade of red.
For example, if you’ve got pale skin and blonde hair, your red lipstick of choice will look totally different if you were to say, change to a brunette hair colour. So remember to consider both, your skin tone and hair colour at the time, when choosing the perfect shade of red lipstick for you.
Here are some tips:
- Fair skin tone looking for a bold pop of colour go with a red/orange shade
- Olive skin can pretty much get away with any shade of red lipstick
- Darker skin tones look stunning with deeper shades of red or cherry red
- Some reds will make your teeth appear whiter while others make your teeth look more yellow so choose wisely.
MYTH #2: All lipsticks are the same
Let’s bust that myth right out of the water. The way a lipstick is formulated can defer from brand to brand. A higher price point doesn’t necessarily mean it’s got ‘gold standard’ ingredients, often you’re simply paying for the brand name attached to it. That’s why it pays to dig deeper and look at the ingredients, just like you would check your cereal box.
Similarly, not all lipsticks labelled ‘natural’ are 100% natural or vegan for that matter. Natural, again, is different to vegan. Lipsticks can be natural or both natural and vegan.
What’s the difference?
Natural lipsticks are made solely from ingredients found naturally in nature. This could include natural plant and seed oils and waxes like Shea Butter, Avocado and Almond oils to name a few. Ingredients like Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honey bees may also be used to form a moisture-locking barrier on the lips.
You can see the benefits in a matter of days when you start wearing natural lipsticks regularly. The skin on your lips appears plump as the natural oils smooth out fine lines and continues to moisturise and renew the skin over time.
Natural vegan lipsticks contain no animal-derived ingredients. Natural alternatives are used instead. Our line of natural vegan lip gloss, for example, uses Jojoba, Pomegranate and Rosehip oils as natural lip conditioners.
Long-wearing lipsticks that last all day, on the other hand, may include, silicone derived polymers to help the colour pigment adhere to the lips for longer. The quality and quantities used can make all the difference in whether your lips feel comfortable or dry and dehydrated. And if you’re in the habit of licking your lips often, like most do, they tend to dry out further as the moisture on your lips evaporates.
Myth #3 Lipsticks can make your lips darker
This is yet another misconception that if you wear lipstick every day your lips can become darker. Lipsticks, even the long-wearing ones, come off at some point and have little chance of permanently changing the colour of your lips.
Other factors such as age, internal hormonal changes, sun exposure or smoking could cause discolouration of the lips, more than the lipsticks themselves.
Moreover, using a poor quality lipstick can lead to dry and chapped lips which may also appear darker. Don’t forget, the skin on your lips is more delicate than the rest of the face so treat them with care and pamper them with the best lip products you can afford.
